The trench coat is a raincoat made of waterproof heavy-duty cotton drill or wool gabardine or leather.
It is usually knee-lenght. This article of clothing has military origins : it was developed as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats worn by British and French soldiers in the First World War.
Burberry and Aquascutum are the first brands that produced the trench.
During the second World War, not only British soldiers wore this cloth but also the United States and Soviet Union , France, Germany, Holland..

The typical trench coat has cuff straps on the raglan sleeves, shoulder straps and a belt. The colours are beige, khaki and black. It is perfect for summer, for rainy days but in winter it doesn't protect the body from the cold.
Piccola storia del trench
Il trench è un impermeabile maschile in gabardine, drill di cotone o pelle. E' un capo che ha origini militari: infatti il nome trench coat significa " cappotto da trincea " e veniva indossato dagli ufficiali inglesi nella Prima Guerra Mondiale. I primi marchi a produrlo furono Aquascutum e Burberry.
Nella seconda Guerra Mondiale anche gli americani, i francesi, gli olandesi lo impiegarono.
Nei decenni seguenti al secondo conflitto, il trench è diventato un capo proposto e sempre reinterpretato nella moda e fa ormai parte del vestiario di maschi e femmine. E' diventato celebre anche grazie alla produzione cinematografica. Fu reso celebre nell'epoca post moderna da Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca.
Il tipico trench prevede : maniche a raglan, spalline, cinta e doppiopetto. I colori? beige, khaki e nero. Ogni sua parte che oggi ci sembra oggetto d'ornamento, in realtà aveva una funzione ben specifica. La cinghietta posta al bordo del collo permetteva di alzarlo e chiuderlo per proteggersi dalla pioggia. Gli anelli in metallo applicati alla cintura venivano appesi la borraccia e altri oggetti.
In questi anni abbiamo notato le varie reinterpretazioni del trench-coat da parte dei designers.
La tavolozza dei colori si è estesa, l'uso di materiali e di dettagli si è ampliato:
ormai il trench è il protagonista di ogni collezione primaverile.
